RiverWare Enhancements for PMF Modeling at TVA

CADSWES

Abstract: RiverWare was enhanced to support modeling the new range of flows encountered in TVA's Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) modeling. A Power Plant Failure method was added to model the shutoff and failure of the power plant due to large pool elevations, outflows, or tailwater elevations. The reservoir and bi-directional canal were enhanced to allow the Max Capacity flag to be specified on reservoir outflow. The nomenclature of the unregulated spill was changed from flashboards and superboards to be more generic to model overtopping flows. The slope storage iteration scheme was modified to prevent diverging solutions. Better diagnostics were added to the slope storage Max Capacity routines.
In addition, although there is not a need to run optimization with PMF flows, it was unknown if expanded reservoir tables would affect normal flow range optimization runs in terms of numerical results, stability, and performance. Tests were performed and confirmed that the expanded tables did not affect normal runs.
